La Belle France

Loved my visit to France recently (my first - not before time), despite torrential rain and severe flooding in places! A couple of things impressed me - firstly the ready availability of Bandes Desinées albums in all bookshops and supermarkets - OK, a pretty limited selection in the latter, comprising gag strips/Asterix etc. with some of the more popular fantasy series, but still... I'd love to see a selection of hardback comic strip albums in Asda when I go shopping!

The second thing I was imp… Continue

Sketch Blog

I've managed to keep my sketch blog going since Bristol - it's really made me question what I like to draw and made me realise where my many weaknesses lie! I've been trying to do a sketch of Wonder Woman and just can't get that heroic, noble feel I want. Give me an ugly monster to draw any day. Sketches can be seen at www.nigeldobbyn.com then follow the links.
I'm off to the Dordogne for a week, so expect some cave painting influenced stuff to be posted… Continue

Bristol Expo 2008

I greatly enjoyed the Saturday I spent at Bristol this year, despite almost losing my voice by the end of the day. I did more sketches than I have in years at the Classical Comics, Panini and Futurequake stands ranging over my whole career. The nicest thing is still Sonic fans telling me how much they were influenced by the comic and inspired to create their own.

Things of note:
Finding out about new weekly comic The DFC from the Etherington brothers - I've ordered a subscription purely because… Continue

Recommendations

A couple of strips I've discovered recently, all of which have taken my breath away!

The "Yakari" series (Cinebook) by Derib and Job - beautifully told stories of an American Indian boy and his animal friends, aimed at younger readers, I guess, but enjoyable by all. A cartoony style (Derib also does the more realistic western series Buddy Longway), with magnificent landscapes. The first volume is called "Yakari and Great Eagle" - I think there are six volumes available in translat… Continue

Dogbreath

I've just finished a few spot illos for the next Dogbreath fanzine (#18, I think), to go with a text story - should be out for the Bristol show. I've also written a seven page strip for them with a couple of new characters, which I'd like to draw up if time allows.

I'll look into that and correct the problem (probably a wrong link on my part, thanks for the heads up.

Many thanks Nigel. Unfortunately the pencillers want to ink themselves now, so there's nothing on the horizon from Classical Comics. How weird is it being paid in advance!?

Just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed your artwork Nigel, your version on Dredd, as featured in Red Razors, was one of the best.
