La Belle France

Loved my visit to France recently (my first - not before time), despite torrential rain and severe flooding in places! A couple of things impressed me - firstly the ready availability of Bandes Desinées albums in all bookshops and supermarkets - OK, a pretty limited selection in the latter, comprising gag strips/Asterix etc. with some of the more popular fantasy series, but still... I'd love to see a selection of hardback comic strip albums in Asda when I go shopping! The second thing I was imp… Continue

Sketch Blog

I've managed to keep my sketch blog going since Bristol - it's really made me question what I like to draw and made me realise where my many weaknesses lie! I've been trying to do a sketch of Wonder Woman and just can't get that heroic, noble feel I want. Give me an ugly monster to draw any day. Sketches can be seen at www.nigeldobbyn.com then follow the links. I'm off to the Dordogne for a week, so expect some cave painting influenced stuff to be posted… Continue

Bristol Expo 2008

I greatly enjoyed the Saturday I spent at Bristol this year, despite almost losing my voice by the end of the day. I did more sketches than I have in years at the Classical Comics, Panini and Futurequake stands ranging over my whole career. The nicest thing is still Sonic fans telling me how much they were influenced by the comic and inspired to create their own. Things of note: Finding out about new weekly comic The DFC from the Etherington brothers - I've ordered a subscription purely because… Continue

Recommendations

A couple of strips I've discovered recently, all of which have taken my breath away! The "Yakari" series (Cinebook) by Derib and Job - beautifully told stories of an American Indian boy and his animal friends, aimed at younger readers, I guess, but enjoyable by all. A cartoony style (Derib also does the more realistic western series Buddy Longway), with magnificent landscapes. The first volume is called "Yakari and Great Eagle" - I think there are six volumes available in translat… Continue

Dogbreath

I've just finished a few spot illos for the next Dogbreath fanzine (#18, I think), to go with a text story - should be out for the Bristol show. I've also written a seven page strip for them with a couple of new characters, which I'd like to draw up if time allows. Continue

William the Cat

Having finally got around to typing up my Victorian-style Billy the Cat adventure - "William the Cat" - I'm pleased to say that the script has been accepted without any changes, so I'll be drawing it up over the next few months. The ten page strip will apear in the Beano Annual 2010 (out in 2009). Since this was so well received, I aleady have plans for writing and drawing further, modern day, Billy strips. I'd never realised writing would be so much fun! Continue

The Death of Macbeth

The Macbeth graphic novel from Classical Comics is finally nearing completion. I finished colouring the artwork yesterday. Jon Haward has certainly made me work for my money on these last few pages, which have a huge cast and a suitably epic quality to them. Gary Erskine also pitched in to help with the inking on the last pages and will be fully inking Jon on the next project of his - The Tempest - which I'm also down to colour and letter.

It's been a slog at times getting the 121 page

Birmingham Show

Had a good time at Birmingham. There was a point on the Saturday afternoon when I thought I'd be twiddling my thumbs all weekend, but things perked up when Nigel Kitching, Richard Elson and got together with a load of Sonic the Comic fans we'd arranged to meet on the Saturday night - there must have been about 25 of them altogether (the wonder of the internet) and I stayed talking to people, sketching etc. for three and a half hours. Some of them are turning into really accomplished artists,

Beano Annual 2008

Got my copy of the Beano Annual in Borders yesterday (Yes, I have to buy my own copy! Thankyou, D.C.Thomson). Billy the Cat has printed up nicely. Shame that it had to be split differently than it was written by Kev (so the 'splash' panels are in entirely the wrong place!), but I think it still looks pretty good.

Showed it to a guy promoting Stockton Adult Education Centre who was in the store and got offered a job teaching Photoshop techniques!

Won't b

Classical Comics in the Press

Classical Comics has had good coverage about their comic strip adaptations, particularly Henry V, in both the Times Educational Supplement and in the Daily Mail this week. Let's hope sales match the press interest.

Strangely, the Laurence Olivier version of Henry V is on re-release in cinemas this week as part of the British Summer of Film. Could this be kismet?

Birmingham

Anyone out there heading to the Birmingham show in October? If so, maybe we could have a Down the Tubes get together! I'm going to be there both days, possibly doing something Sonic the Comic related over the weekend, but if there's anything else anyone would like me to get involved with, I'm up for pretty much anything. Continue

Bulletproof #1

I got my copy of Bulletproof 1 in the post this morning - it's a lovely looking package, only 5 years in the making! It's a squarebound 80 page anthology, selling for £2.50 and well worth the price, I reckon - check out the BULLETPROOF website for a preview.

Bulletproof Comics

Contacted by Matt Yeo (editor of Toxic magazine) the other day about a project for which Nigel Kitching and I did a strip many years ago and which we never thought would never see the light of day, namely 'Magpie'. This has been on my website, but is now finally going to see print in Bulletproof Comics No. 1

I'm being sent a copy and will be intrigued to see what it looks like. The artwork is a little dated (I ink everything digitally now), but I think the strip holds up OK still. Will

Henry V

Just got the 'ashcan' promos for Henry V in the post from Classical Comics - it's looking like a very classy product indeed. Still working on the letters - up to about 250 pages now and starting to get cramp, eyestrain etc.! (Still, better than packing frozen ready meals, eh? one of my jobs during the lean times!)

I also got used as a testimonial in Comicraft's latest mailout. Wasn't expecting that.

Dogbreath

The next issue of the Strontium Dog fanzine Dogbreath features a full colour wraparound cover by me of Middenface McNulty and a load of gronks. It's a great fanzine - well worth checking out. The new issue should be out in time for the Birmingham show, which I'll also be attending. Continue

Billy the Cat vs General Jumbo

This year's Beano annual features a first (?) meeting between Beano 'action heroes' Billy the Cat and General Jumbo. Wriiten by Kev Sutherland and drawn by me, the strip runs to 16 pages.

It was originally intended to appear as four 4-page episodes in the weekly, but I ran out of time on the deadline for the Annual for another Billy strip and this had to be substituted instead. Unfortunately, the breaks in the story have therefore had to be placed slightly differently, but I've tried t
