SciFi Art Now Book Gets Green Light
Good news, I hope: ILEX Books (www.ilex-press.com) have given the green light to SciFi Art Now, the book project I'm editing. It should be published in Autumn 2010.
I do hope some folk here will want to have a sample of your work considered for the final book. We want the book to feature the very best samples from new and established illustrators.
The chapter headings for the book are:
- Sirens of SciFi (Think women in space or on alien worlds or alien situations)
- Aliens and Alien Worlds (The weirder the better!)
- Radical Robots (Obvious, I hope)
- Incredible Cities (Ditto) - Spacecraft and Spacenauts (The technology and hardware chapter)
- Future War (All-out action, hand-to-robot conflict etc.)
- Steampunk (advanced technology in the altered past)
There are a few restrictions on what will be considered:
- The art must never have been published in another art book (Spectrum, Ballistic Publishing or an artist's published sketchbook).
- It must have been created in the last 18 months.
- You must own the publishing rights to the artwork (you'll need to secure permission for use for art commissioned by a third party, see release form for details).
Editorially, my ILEX editor would prefer to see more aliens and human SF visuals -- i.e. the characters of modern SF -- rather than spaceships and alien vistas, but there will be space for those too.
Technically, we need colour or black and white images to be supplied at 300dpi to at least trim size, which in the case of this book is 247 x 247 mm (roughly 10" x 10" imperial).
It would be great to have your art by 8th January 2010 if possible.
Words-wise, we also need just 75 to a hundred words or so from you, outlining briefly the inspiration for your work, how you created it, digital or 'real world', etc.
We also of course need the work's title, your name, whether it's a book cover or whatever, medium, and, if you have one, your website.
If the work you're submitting for consideration is owned or part-owned by a third party, we'll need a copyright line too.
There is no payment for the use of material. As you know, there are several 'creative directories' out there that charge artists for submissions, but ILEX took the view to make its 'Art Now' series, which includes Comic Art Now, Fantasy Art Now etc., editorially based, offering a free platform to give artists a free 'platform', in print, for their best sample work.
Featured contributors will, of course, receive a free copy of the final book.
Contributors to the other books in the series have secured work as a result of being in the collections, which I hope is further incentive.
